Our HNC Fashion and Textiles students are working on their FMP theme of Art and Design and the Environment. In this session we looked at creating print design and colour using rust from found objects. Rust dyeing is a really simple but effective technique to create vibrant colours with simple ingredients. The students chose their fabrics and sprayed them with a vinegar and water mix to speed up the process. They then laid their rusty and metal objects on the fabric in their chosen design and wrapped in plastic. These were left in metal trays overnight and in less than 24 hours we had these fantastic results. One of our second year students joined the session as it fit with his FMP theme too so groups were able to work together to learn with and from each other.
